Just an Ankle Sprain?
Ankle sprains are are one of the most common injuries in sport and everyday life.
In some instances, the management of an ankle sprain is fairly straightforward; initially controlling the inflammation with RICE (rest, ice, compression and elevation), then undertaking some simple physiotherapy exercises to restore strength, control, balance and proprioception.
You may be surprised to know that not all ankle sprains are equal.
The correct management of your injury depends on the precise structures you have injured, For this reason, it is very important to have your injury properly assessed and diagnosed.
Ankle injuries can result in damage to a number of different ligaments, muscles, tendons and nerves. They can also result in bone fractures or damage to the syndesmosis (a connective tissue between your tibia and fibula).
Incorrect or delayed injury management may lead to chronic ankle pain, instability or other biomechanics problems affecting your knee, hip and spine.
It is important to remember that your feet and ankle joints are the foundations of your body. Make sure you look after them!
