Lumps in armpits
Lumps in armpits
Ever noticed one of these?
Lumps in armpits can commonly pop up while your breastfeeding as breast tissue runs into the armpit alongside the lymphatic system. This area is called the Tail of Spence.
Women can notice a lump popping up especially when they are engorged or have a blocked duct.
To manage these lumps it’s always a good idea to see a lactation physiotherapist or your doctor however, as a starting point at home my first suggestion to clients is always to try to empty their breast as much as possible. If baby isn’t emptying your affected side ensure you either pump or hand express after your feed. Carrying out some gentle lymphatic massage in the neck and armpit of the affected side (think gentle circles to the depth of stroking a cat) and holding a vibrator / vibrating toothbrush over the lump to gently break it up and get the fluid moving can effectively reduce the lump.
If you have any concerns about lumps that are uncomfortable, painful or just shouldn’t be there, please don’t hesitate to contact us to speak to one of our lactation physiotherapists Alice Mackenzie or Libby Whyatt.
