STOP GUZZLING WATER!

How often have you reached the end of your day and realised… “I’ve not had a single drop of water today!” then thought… “I’ll just down this bottle so that I stay hydrated” then you find yourself racing to the toilet multiple times afterwards. STOP GUZZLING WATER!

This is something that we commonly come across in clinic and it isn’t a good practice to get in the habit of. The reason why… the average bladder can hold between 400-500mls of fluid. If you ‘guzzle’ a huge glass or bottle of water in one sitting your bladder and kidneys must change gear and go into overdrive to process the amount of water coming in. This can stress the urinary system out and make it irritable – subsequently increasing urinary frequency and sometimes urgency and urge incontinence.

People often ask “How much should I be drinking throughout the day?”.

This is a difficult question to answer accurately as we all have different hydration needs – compare a brick layer out in the sun all day… He will need more water than someone sitting in air conditioning behind a desk. An easy way to know how much to drink is to look at your urine in the toilet – if it is yellow, has an odour or is cloudy you are not drinking enough where as if your urine is clear (like water) you are over drinking.

It is best to drink water frequently and generally cap your caffeinated drinks to 2-3 across the day. This is generalised advice however and it is always best to seek individualised professional advice based on your unique circumstances.

If you are experiencing any bladder irritability, incontinence or bladder control issues, please don’t hesitate to contact us for an appointment on (07) 5474 9093 to speak to one of our friendly reception team members.
