BLOCKED DUCTS - BREASTFEEDING CASE STUDY
Hi everyone, it’s Alice. I’m the director and one of the physios and alchemy so today I wanted to speak specifically on how a telehealth consultation can actually help the pregnant population. So like I’ve said previously telling health a lot of people think well I’m really not going to get any value out of seeing my physio or a physio via Telehealth because there’s a purely hands-on which a lot of what we do is hands-on, absolutely but there is an awful lot of stuff that we do that is hands-off and in terms of recommendations and advice there’s a lot of value that you can be getting out of that side of physio to actually assist with your concerns and improve your function.
So, I’ll list a few things that we can be doing via telehealth and for the pregnant women. So the first thing that I would say that we pretty much see every pregnant woman experiencing to some degree of musculoskeletal or joint pain, so there are many specific joint conditions and musculoskeletal issues that pregnant women experience as well as lots of general musculoskeletal and joint conditions, back pain, neck pain.
In terms of the pregnant girls a lot of pregnant women experience rib pain. Ribs actually start to open up and fan with their babies actually growing they can experience wrist pain, carpal tunnel syndrome, de Quervain synovitis (which is pain at the base of your thumb), there are lots of specific pregnant related musculoskeletal conditions that we can be firstly giving you a basic assessment to get a basic preliminary diagnosis as well as providing a lot of advice and recommendations in terms of positioning and self-management self-release and stretches all those sorts of things that can actually significantly reduce your symptoms, without us actually putting our hands on.
The next obvious thing that we can be giving you a lot of advice and help with is pelvic floor care so a lot of people generally think of pelvic floor in terms of exercises. I only need to strengthen my pelvic floor but leading into potentially having a vaginal birth more so it’s actually very important that you have the ability to be able to relax your pelvic floor as well as making sure that your pelvic floors nice and strong and functional so what we can actually be doing throughout your pregnancy is working on both improving strength or maintaining strength and time as well as improving your ability to be able to relax your pelvic floor, which is going to be really important going into a vaginal birth and going into a delivery.
So we can be giving you lots of help in terms of that we can obviously be giving you lots of very specific tailored advice when it comes to bladder and bowel concerns and issues so a lot of not a lot but some women experience some stress incontinence so when they laugh or cough or sneeze or bend over stand up when they actually exert themselves during the pregnancy they can experience some urine leakage as well so that’s a really uncomfortable embarrassing issue that a lot of our or not a lot again but some of our clients experience so we can be giving you some very specific exercises and considerations to actually manage that and another concern is obviously bowel dysfunction as well so some women experience constipation which can lead to bearing down and straining pelvic floor stretching haemorrhoids all those sorts of concerns there are many downsides to becoming constipated and straining so we can be looking specifically at what you’re drinking what you’re eating we can be giving advice in terms of positioning how to empty your bowel little bit more effectively and comfortably as well as go through a very tailored individualized bladder about retraining program if you need any so from a bladder and bowel perspective a I tend to be the primary things that we can help you out with throughout pregnancy we can obviously be giving you very specific advice in terms of exercise so throughout your pregnancy it’s really important that you are doing exercise that is actually serving you and your body now if everyone’s tolerance to exercise is going to be different so it’s very important that you get highly individualized professional advice in terms of what you are doing during the pregnancy so that it is safe for you but also safe for your baby so we can absolutely come up with a very specific program that manages a specific weakness or pain a concern that you’re experiencing or it can be very general in nature if you’re just wanting to maintain strength and improve tone we can really be giving you any sort of exercise program utilizing the equipment that you have at home so it’s very easy for you to be doing and so you can feel like you’re maintaining your strength and flexibility another thing that we can obviously be giving you advice on is our body ergonomics and postural patterning and positions are you getting into a lot of women find it quite difficult finding a comfortable position to sleep at night or simple things like getting in and out of a car or on off the couch there are many specific recommendations and tips that we can be giving you to improve your level of comfort and improve your function during these or when you’re doing these simple tasks throughout your everyday life and we can be giving you advice in terms of compression and support diamonds that can actually provide support to your pelvic floor that can provide support to your abdominal wall to your back so we can be having a chat about where your concerns are lying and actually giving you specific advice in terms of what to purchase either online or at a chemist through us we can post garments out to use there’s many things that we can be actually doing in terms of providing some support external for your body and lastly we can give you or not lastly but in addition to that list we can be giving you some support leading up to delivering your beautiful baby so we can be shedding some light on different options we can be giving you unbiased very supportive advice depending on whatever wherever your body is functionally and physically and discuss different options that sometimes a lot of women are fearful to talk about because they feel like they need to go one way or the other so we are very open and honest and unbiased and we really love to be there for all of our clients to be able to help them make the best informed decision for them and their body which is really important to go into delivering this baby feeling informed and relaxed so look that would be the primary things I’d say we would be doing via telehealth so but I’m sure that this isn’t exhaustive I’m sure I’ve got many things but look what I would say is to have a chat to us about telehealth if you’re pregnant there’s lots of value that you’ll be able to get just by having a chat to us over a teller over a video and we can actually see an awful lot via video so we can do many different assessments that will shed an awful lot of light on what exercises and what we can actually be providing for you to book and telehealth consult with us you can either give us a call so our number is five four seven four nine zero nine three or you can go onto our website wwlp.com debut and you can just find the book now but you just click on that then go physio and then you can select either initial telehealth or follow-up telehealth so if you’re a new patient you haven’t come to see us ever before in clinic click initial.
If you are a patient of ours, you have seen Clinic click the follow-up and then you can just select whether they have a clinician you would like to see anyway.
