Pelvic Floor Muscle Training for Female Stress Urinary Incontinence: A Randomised Controlled Trial Comparing Home and Outpatient Training

In the current climate of COVID and the difficulties with getting out of the house, this study couldn’t have come at a better time!

It highlights the benefits that come from BOTH in clinic and at home pelvic floor muscle training for women experiencing stress urinary incontinence (SUI).

Stress urinary incontinence occurs when urine leaks out as pressure builds up in your body. Most commonly, SUI occurs with laughing, coughing or sneezing, but can also be movement related and people can experience SUI when running, bouncing, jumping or even walking, standing up from a chair or changing position. SUI can be mild where just a few drops come out to severe where your clothes are soaked.

It is an incredibly embarrassing and debilitating condition however there is good news! SUI can be improved considerably with pelvic floor physiotherapy which commonly involves:

  • Pelvic floor strengthening exercises
  • Activity modification
  • Bladder retraining
  • Ergonomics / exercise modification

    Primary findings:
  • Literature suggests that supervised pelvic floor muscle training should be a first line treatment option for female stress urinary incontinence
  • 62% of stress urinary incontinence objectively improved in the outpatient clinic setting vs. 28% of stress urinary incontinence improved at home
  • There was no difference in subjective treatment satisfaction, quality of life, pelvic floor muscle function and episodes of stress urinary incontinence between the outpatient clinic and home setting
  • Home based setting adherence was superior to the outpatient clinic setting for one month only
